Biography and art education
Victoria ( Vika) Benson is an artist based in London with a unique vision, borne out of her fascinating and eventful life.
Originally from Abkhazia, Georgia ( which was then part of the USSR), she spent twenty-two years in Israel working as a senior medical doctor. But her passion for art saw her decamp to England in 2014 to pursue her dream of both studying and later exhibiting as a full time artist.
She studied art more than ten years at Morley College, Hampstead Art School , The Essential school of painting, Turps Banana ( two years of correspondence course and 1-2-1 tuition one year) , private mentoring with artist mentor Ceri Hand.
Victoria exhibited her paintings in the end of year shows 2022 and 2024(The ESOP) , three times at the Boomer Gallery and RA summer show 2025.
Her artwork has been very positively reviewed by acclaimed art critic Antony Fawcett .
Victoria’s oeuvre spans paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics and collages all of which have a striking intensity. Her primary subject matter is the strong, almost classical “earth mother”woman, painted and sculpted in many guises, in an uncompromising half-cubist, half-surrealistic style which she made her own.
There are surely nods to historic painters and sculptors from Picasso to Louise Bourgeois.
Since 2013, Victoria has gradually consolidated her artistic vision through dedicated practice in painting and sculpture. Her approach is rooted in modernism, guided by intuition and deep familiarity with her materials.
This experience allows her to convey nuanced emotional and conceptual ideas, making her work both thought-provoking and accessible. She strives to create narratives and imagery that connect with viewers, inviting them to infuse their interpretations and emotions into her creations.
Over the years, her commitment has shaped a distinct artistic voice - one that balances personal expression with an open invitation for audience engagement.
Artist Statement
I have gradually consolidated my artistic vision through intensive painting and sculpture practice since 2013.
My approach could be described as modernist. I use intuition to guide the construction of my painting, and my earned experience with materials helped me express those thoughtful and emotional concepts.
I am trying to make my narratives and visual imagery as accessible as possible to visually communicate with a viewer so that a viewer can flood it with their associations and responses.
